Category Definitions

When nominating an individual or business in the categories provided always consider a candidate who has exemplified superior customer service or community support and has embraced an outstanding commitment to quality.

Community Support / Non-Profit Organization: Must be a non-profit organization or community group that has demonstrated outstanding support through community events, activities or services.

Best Restaurant: For restaurants of any size showing excellence in quality of food, service and management.

Tourism Business: A business that has consistently delivered top quality products or service that has enhanced tourism/hospitality for the area. These may include: Accommodations, meetings and event facilities, recreation facilities and attractions.

Health & Wellness Business: A business engaged in promoting and enhancing physical, mental or social wellbeing.

New Business: A new business registered within the last 2 years.

Small Business: A business independently owned or operated with a small number of employees (up to 10).This may include sole-proprietorships and home based businesses.

Large Business: A business employing more than 10 employees.

Retail: A business engaged in the retail sector; consisting of the direct sale of goods or merchandise to the consumer.

Technology Business: A business demonstrating creativity and innovation in adopting or
developing new technology.

Professional Services Business: A business or individual providing professional services. A professional is someone who is required to maintain a professional license or designation. Eligible professionals include Engineers, Lawyers, Accountants, Doctors, Certified Management Consultants and Architects etc. **These occupations are listed as examples only and voters are welcome to nominate any business or individual who they feel fits this category.

Citizen of the Year: This special award recognizes an individual for the significant contributions they make to benefit the community in some exceptional manner such as in outstanding community service, charitable work, or heroism. The nominees must live or work in Kanata, Goulbourn or West Carleton and shall:

• not have received any remuneration for the volunteer activity for which the award is being proposed, or
• have voluntarily performed duties related to their paid employment significantly beyond what is expected of a person holding that paid position.

Rules: Read carefully before completing!

• Online nominations will remain open until midnight on Thursday, December 22, 2011. After that date, no further nominations will be accepted.
• All nominees will be required to complete a validation form prior to the commencement of voting. This form will include a brief biography of the business and certification that the nominee has “neither created, nor solicited anyone else to create, votes outside of the rules of the PCBA”. If the validation form is not completed, the nominee may be disqualified from the voting. The PCBA Validating Committee will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of the PCB Awards. Their mandate will include scrutinizing the voting results and confirming that validation forms have been received from eligible nominees.
• Voting for the validated nominees will open on Monday, January 9, 2012 and close at midnight on Friday, February 3, 2012.
• You may nominate any number of individuals or businesses. However, each individual or business can only be nominated in up to two award categories. In the event that an individual or business is nominated in more than two categories, the nominee will be contacted and asked to confirm in which two award categories they wish to remain for voting.
• You may only vote for one individual or business in each category. Only one email address may be registered under your name. In the event that multiple email addresses are registered under the same name, you will be contacted and informed that the additional email addresses and any corresponding votes will be removed.
• A nominee can only win in one category. In the event that a nominee receives the most votes in two categories, the nominee will receive the award for the category in which they obtain the largest margin of votes.
• In the event of a tie (two individuals or businesses receiving the same highest number of votes in one category), you may be contacted to provide us with additional reasons for your vote.
• The top five finalists in each category will be determined by the number of votes received in that category. Each finalist will receive a plaque and be recognized on the website and at the awards gala.
• With the exception of the Kanata Chamber Citizen of the Year award, the winner in each category will be determined by the number of votes received in that category.
• A nominated business or individual must be located in Kanata, Goulbourn or West Carleton. Eligible businesses must be in the following Postal Code areas: K2K – K2L – K2M – K2S – K2T – K2V – K2W – K7C – K0A
• You may start to vote and go back at a later date to continue voting for other categories if you wish.
• Kanata Chamber Citizen of the Year Award Specifications
  The nominee must live or work in Kanata, Goulbourn or West Carleton. Please ensure you indicate on the nomination form the geographical area in which you believe the individual resides or works, together with reasons why you are nominating the individual. You will be required to provide information to support your nomination (minimum 300 characters, maximum 600 characters permitted on the submission form). All nominations received for the Kanata Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award will be reviewed by a selection committee.  There will be no vote in this category. The winner will be determined by a selection committee. The winner of the Kanata Chamber Citizen of the Year award will not be eligible for nomination in the following year and will form part of that year’s selection committee.
